Social Media Apps, including Instagram and Facebook, have been negatively impacting young teens. These algorithms have created addictive swiping habits that have perpetuated negative self-image, especially in young audiences, and can account for the development of eating disorders in some. How can young children battle these effects?
Even if you follow body-positive content, many teenagers have nevertheless reported that the algorithm still manages to show them triggering accounts, videos, and images, especially teenagers who have struggled with an eating disorder.
Practices that aim to help battle these negative impacts of social media include limiting your screen time. I'll admit, accepting when that time limit has been reached is hard, and this does not only impact mental health. That time limit can help regulate your sleep schedule by limiting blue light interference. Our body clock, aka our circadian rhythms, regulates our bodies at all levels. Dysregulation of our cells' circadian rhythm is associated with psychiatric illness, metabolic disorders, sleep disorders, and many more repercussions. The current world suffers from a chronic dysregulation of circadian rhythms: we are drowning our eyes with blue light from devices when our body is trying to go dark with the solar system.
So please be mindful of your sleep schedules and keep blue light away from your eyes at night. Either get off the phone or utilize this device to take mindful minutes with apps such as Insight Timer.
The COVID-19 Pandemic hasn't helped young teens struggling to cope with their mental health. With much time having been spent. at home, teenagers have gained an increasing reliance on their phones for entertainment., forgetting the downfalls and dangers.
